No New Normal

Murley Herrle-Fanning and Nikolas Chiu

This piece is an abstract work which aims to capture the zeitgeist of 2020. The visuals are dark and chaotic in order to evoke the sentiment or emotions connected to the stressful nature and circumstances of pandemic times. The music has an ambience which elicits a contemplative mood, which is reflective of the way our world has been forced to reconfigure under the extreme and unusual circumstances of the pandemic and other current global issues like climate change. As societies worldwide adapt to the changes brought upon them by these global emergencies, we must resist the idea that things will go back to normal and embrace the opportunity for significant social change. Our piece expresses this spirit of the times with it’s abstract visuals and music. Music by Murley Herrle-Fanning.

Murley Herrle-Fanning
I’m a second year student in the Digital Media Game Arts program studying in Ontario, Canada. I’m currently living on a smart farm in the Ottawa valley, working with networking technologies and animals while developing my skills as an artist. I’m interested in all things digital but work mainly with video, audio, 3D graphics, video games, and web design. My work generally takes a generative or procedural approach, using software and data to create abstract visuals. In my spare time I make music as a hobby, and I like to integrate my music into audio visual works. I’m looking forward to creating games and interactive experiences with fellow artists in the Game Arts program, and exploring the integration of emerging new technologies like deep learning neural networks into these projects.

Nikolas Chiu
I’m a third year student at York University in the Digital Media Game Arts program. I used to be in an Astronomy program for one and a half years, until I rediscovered my passion for art and games. I’m mostly interested in game design and animation. Usually my artworks are based on discoveries that were found by accident. By throwing some random things together, I take whatever peaks my interest and build up from there. As a hobby I play video games in my spare time. I like video games that have a world-building plot and I enjoy immersing myself in them. I have yet to find my own personal style in my artworks, but with each discovery and making of more artworks, I can start to see my art style take shape.
