The mass digitisation of human interaction has redefined connection in the era of the pandemic. While some seamlessly adjust to an evolving social landscape, others see this new age of communication as a hindrance to the full range of human emotion. A Muted Call displays an instance of frustration with the limitations of online interaction. By thrusting the banal narrative of a video call into visual and sonic abstraction, the work explores a thirst for expression beyond the confines of our bodies in webcam.

A Muted Call is a collaboration between students in the Digital Media and the Dance departments at York University. The work is a live performance utilising Zoom as an essential platform for the narrative.

We are curious to explore ways to apply the Max/MSP program to spectator’s webcam within the context of the showcase.

About the performer:
Faadhi Fauzi (they) cooks spicy and makes noise. They are a multidisciplinary artist that aims to explore the space between binaries that separate culture, gender, and understanding. Their work often revolves around the experimental production, interaction, and manipulation of audio – both virtually and physically. Originally from Malaysia, they seek to pioneer engaging and accessible methods of expression that reimagine the way we tell our stories. They also like sour candy and cats. Reach out at @faadhi.
